STRATEGIC CHALLENGES

of the Philippine Maritime Industry under President Duterte's Administrations

Greetings!

Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA), with the PMMA Alumni Host 2017 is happy to invite you to attend the symposium: Strategic Challenges of the Philippine Maritime Industry Under President Duterte’s Administration on April 7, 2017 at the By the Sea Resort Hotel, No 99 National Highway, Olongapo City, Subic Bay, Philippines.
As part of the celebration of the 197th PMMA Foundation Anniversary and Grand Alumni homecoming, the Symposium will try to tackle some important issues that needed to be discussed in the light of recent developments that has besieged the global shipping economy the biggest being the bankruptcy that has befallen Hanjin Shipping, one of the biggest container companies in the word; giant shipping companies forming mega alliances and mergers to survive the glut.

For the Philippines, a country that supplies more than half of all vessels plying the seas internationally with qualified crew, this should cause considerable concern indeed. Hard fact places the country as the number one supplier of crew to the global fleet. This we all know, translate to a yearly remittance of more than 5 billion dollars to national coffers and crewing jobs that has been growing steadily to more than four hundred thousand currently.

Developments like the fall of the containerization industry to ASEAN integration and the advent of modern ships coming into the picture that threatens to replace human labor with technology, the country’s more than four hundred thousand seafarers face a worrying picture.

Placed in the backdrop of a country that just elected into power an unconventional leader, stakeholders and the manning industry do need an assurance of continued employment and viability of the country to future investors.

This is also in line with the presidents’ hard stance in reducing red tape and bureaucracy in the government. Implementing this in the manning sector will greatly ease the burden of these modern-day heroes.  For a stronger Philippine crewing industry and in honor of the prestige that our alma mater has given to us, I am strongly appealing for your help in making this event a success.

Any additional fund and revenue that we can generate from this undertaking will be used to purchase a brand new coaster for PMMA.

Attached herewith is the Program and the registration sheet for your quick perusal and consideration.  Kindly forward to all B'mates. Thank you in behalf of PMMA Alumni Host Class2017.
